Ted Stevens should be tanned, rested and relieved

With his criminal conviction about to be vacated, thanks to a Democratic attorney general, Alaska’s former Senator-for-life Ted Stevens should be tanned, rested and relieved.

But is he ready?

A fellow Republican, Alaska’s Congressman-for-life Don Young, came up with a capital idea for 85-year-old Uncle Ted.

“Personally I’d like to see him run for governor, and that’s my personal feeling,” said Young, who himself has been under investigation by two federal grand juries. Young and Stevens served in Congress together for 36 years.

Sarah Palin, step aside! The statehouse in Juneau “would be a great way to cap off a career” for Stevens, Young told Alaska Public Radio.

Here, up and down the Left Coast of the “lower 48,” government and politics are grim and dreary.

In Washington, social services and higher education are in line to get cut to the bone. The Seattle Times’ editorial page bats down all ideas for raising dollars that would mend our social safety net.

As the state’s basic health plan gets eviscerated, Gov. Chris Gregoire heads to Los Angeles today to chair the White House Regional Forum on Health Reform.

Wonk stuff, compared to Alaska!
