Sunday, March 29th, 2009

Tiger Woods reserved his chase for a sixth title at Bay Hill alive, courtesy of a small game that twisted a middling round into a 69 to put him in fifth position at five shots at the back at 137.

We have three youthful quarterbacks

Sunday, March 29th, 2009

The Patriots should anticipate they can get Rex Ryan at his word.

“We like the guys we’ve got,” the Jets new trainer said this week on the yearly NFL owners meetings when questioned if gossips of New York’s significance in disgruntled Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler are spot on.

If Ryan be fond of the guys he’s got at quarterback, I like his odds of missing the game, and you ought to, as well.

“We believe with Brett Ratliff, Kellen Clemens and Erik Ainge, we have three youthful quarterbacks,” Ryan said.

In reality he does. Nothing is up till now 30, and if so as to be the job portrayal all three positions have been overflowing. Now if you insert, “who won some games in this league,” Rex Ryan have a trouble, which ought to be no problem for Patriots fans.

Internet Explorer 8 hacked at hacking competition

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

A 25-year-old German graduate student who goes only by Nils has hacked Internet Explorer 8, along with Safari and Firefox, at CanSecWest’s hacking competition.

CanSecWest is a security conference that is being held at the Sheraton Wall Centre hotel in downtown Vancouver, B.C.

Microsoft is one of 16 listed sponsors. The conference started Monday and ends today.

The hacking competition is just one portion of a larger conference, but it gets most of the attention. This year, the hackers set to crack the major Internet browsers and mobile devices such as the Blackberry, iPhone, G1 Android phone and other smart phones.

Nils exploited all three of the browsers within 30 minutes, a conference spokeswoman said.

“He hasn’t told everybody his last name. Everybody’s been trying to get contact information, and he wont give his last name,” conference spokeswoman Melissa Pelto said.

TippingPoint Technologies, a company that designs intrusion detection systems, offers $5,000 in cash for bugs that are reported.

Security expert Charlie Miller was the first person to crack one of the world’s major browsers, breaking into Apple Inc.’s Safari in under 30 seconds.

“It was pretty much over before I knew it had started,” Pelto said.

Attacks are prepared beforehand and executed during the competition. Nobody has tried to hack Google’s Chrome browser.

A browser hack is defined as “code execution within the context of the application.” — In other words, getting it to do something, Pelto said.

For the mobile hacking competition, the user needs to gain access to a machine, run an application and demonstrate a loss of information or user data, Pelto said.

So far, nobody has hacked the mobile devices. Each day, additional software is loaded onto the mobile devices to make them easier to exploit.

“It will be interesting to see what comes out today,” Pelto said.

Ars Technica has more on Charlie Miller, and his former hacks.

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

As part of the company’s initiative to better serve small and medium businesses (SMB), HP has unveiled several products and solutions designed to help customers manage, protect and grow their businesses, even in today’s challenging market.

Along with new HP Officejet printers that deliver up to 50 percent cost per page and energy savings compared to competitive laser printers, the company also unveiled new partner programs designed to help SMB customers quickly identify HP partners who can maximize their technology investments.

“While making everything spent count is important in today’s economic climate, getting more out of what you spend is even more essential,” said Jenny Siquioco, General Manager, Imaging and Printing Group, HP Philippines.

“Total worldwide technology spending will only grow by 0.5 percent in 2009, but SMB technology spending will grow by 3.2 percent, despite the economic downturn,” said Ray Boggs, Vice President, SMB Research, IDC. “SMBs are feeling the heat to optimize their technology investments by coordinating new purchases with existing resources while also ensuring that they have enough support and funding.

“Technology providers like HP are in the best position to benefit from this growing segment because they take a comprehensive approach to meeting the diverse needs of SMB customers.”

AT&T offering iPhones without two-year contract

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

AT&T has confirmed a report that it will offer iPhones without a two-year contract starting next week.

The Associated Press quoted an AT&T representative Thursday confirming plans to sell no-contract iPhones for $599 or $699 starting next Thursday, as first reported Wednesday by the Boy Genius Report. There’s a catch, however; those phones will still be locked to AT&T’s network.

A regular AT&T iPhone account will be required to operate the phone, although theoretically you could activate the phone one day, cancel your account the next, and only be out activation fees and a month’s worth of service, rather than two years worth of service. But then you’d be reduced to using your expensive iPhone over just Wi-Fi networks unless you’re willing to unlock it for other networks.

An Apple representative did not immediately return a call seeking comment on whether a similar offer would be in place at Apple’s retail stores, which the AP was also unable to confirm.

Telefónica and Vodafone about to share infrastructure

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

Two of the world’s largest mobile phone operators, the Spanish company Telefónica and the British giant Vodafone Group, said Monday that they would share infrastructure in some European markets in a move meant to cut costs as the economic downturn erodes their profits.

The companies said they had agreed to share networks in Britain, Germany, Ireland and Spain, and were in “detailed discussions” about doing so in the Czech Republic. In practice, the agreement means the companies will jointly build sites or consolidate existing 2G and 3G antenna mast sites and infrastructure, reducing the total number of cellphone antenna masts in operation.

The companies said they would continue to manage their call traffic independently, but they said they were also considering possible cooperation in the provision of transmission services.

Vodafone, based in Newbury, England, has about 289 million customers around the world. Telefónica, based in Madrid, has about 260 million customers in its fixed, broadband and mobile phone businesses.

Investors greeted the news coolly. Shares of Telefónica rose 1 percent in Madrid, while shares of Vodafone ticked up less than 1 percent in London.

Matthew Key, chief executive of Telefónica Europe, said in a statement that Telefónica and Vodafone would “continue to compete strongly against each other in local markets, while giving our customers enhanced mobile coverage in more places, using fewer mast sites.” Shareholders will benefit, he said, because “by reducing our costs in areas of the business that customers don’t see, we can ensure that we invest in areas they truly value.”

Michel Combes, chief executive of Vodafone Europe, said in the statement that the move would “enable us to focus our resources on developing more innovative and market leading services while delivering on our pledge to reduce the environmental impact of our network roll out.”

Mushrooms can help cut the risk of breast cancer

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

According to a new study, eating mushrooms can help cut the risk of breast cancer by a great deal.

The Australian study was led by Dr. Min Zhang of the University of Western Australia and focused on women in China.

The focus was Chinese women due to the fact that their breast cancer rate is 5 times lower than that of other Western nations.

The belief was that their traditional Chinese diet may have had something to do with that.

They comopared a survey of around 1,000 breast cancer patients to around 1,000 health patients.

The ages of these patients was said to be constant so they could focus on the diets alone.

What they found was that women who consumed 10 grams of mushrooms daily cut their risk of breast cancer by over 65%.

10 grams of mushrooms is less than one button mushroom, not very much at all.

Another way in which it was found that they could reduce breast cancer was by consuming green tea.

The study has been published in the International Journal of Cancer.
